LYSTER, Thomas William (1855-1922) National Library of Ireland 1878-1920 (CL 1895)
A friendly, bookish librarian but with keen interest in close classification and adequate cataloguing, he is likely to be remembered in particular for having suggested in 1913 a British subject index to periodicals. The first subject lists were published, under LA auspices, in the Athenaeum two years later, thus beginning the Subject index to periodicals, forerunner of British humanities and British technology indexes.
